Promzilla

chance to relive most humiliating teen moment

Going to the prom is a huge milestone in the American adolescent experience. The climax of nearly every teenybopper movie involves either a prom or the tragedy of a promless existence that promises to ostracize a character forever. Whether you were a Carrie (think pig's blood, not Sex in the City) or a Cinderella, the prom is a memorable event and usually a once-in-a-lifetime affair. However, on June 17, Flashpoint Theatre Co. breaks all tradition and hosts its own prom.

Flashpoint was founded in 2003 by five friends, Derick Loafmann, Erin Lucas, Gigi Naglak, Michael Osinski and Meghann Williams, who met at Drew University while studying theater and regrouped five years later to pursue their passion. Their mission to produce "socially provocative and emotionally resonant works" relies heavily on donations, which is where the 2005 "Eternal Flame" prom comes in. The tongue-in-cheek night of second chances is a perfect first fundraising event for the quirky company and its patrons.

Admission includes one raffle ticket, two drinks and a performance by the "Flashpointer Sisters," the company members' spoof of the Pointer Sisters. There will also be cheesy dance tunes by DJ Paul Burress, plus traditional souvenir photos and prizes, including admission to a future Flashpoint show. And, just like at every prom, a king and queen will be crowned following a secret selection process by the staff.

Loafmann, who handles development at Flashpoint, encourages attendees to "bring [their] history" so that the night will be "a collage of prom experiences" from different eras. This is probably the only prom where going stag truly doesn't have any stigma, but couples are also welcome. Authentic relics of taffeta and cummerbunds are highly encouraged.

Eternal Flame Prom 2005, presented by The Flashpoint Theatre Co., Fri., June 17, 9 p.m.-1 a.m., $20-$25, Irish Pub, 1123 Walnut St., call 215-514-0361 for tickets.
