It's a game of chance: Some musicians attract so much hype and popular notice, while others equally if not more talented remain unappreciated. And so it is with Lynne Arriale, a gifted pianist. While acknowledged and appreciated by many critics and certain well-versed jazz cognoscenti, she falls into the category of "talent deserving of wider recognition." An early bloomer, Arriale was tapping out tunes on a toy piano at age 3, and her fingers haven't stopped moving along the black and whites since; first classical music, then jazz. A pensive improviser, she evokes kinship to Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans, and like the latter, she's digs the trio format most of all. Together with drummer Steve Davis and bassist Jay Anderson, Arriale churns out sophisticated melodies of her own making along with creatively expressive interpretations of familiar standards.
Fri.-Sat., May 6-7, 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., $25, Zanzibar Blue, 200 S. Broad St., 215-732-4500.
