In the last decade, the mortality rate of black women due to preventable health issues has increased. This has sent activists into a panic to reverse the growth. For six years, Proctor & Gamble aided this effort by taking their Pantene "Total You Tour" to cities and historically black colleges to educate women on the steps to taking control of their lives. "African-American women are among the most susceptible population in the country for obesity, stroke and coronary heart disease," says Berrece Andrews, associate director of multicultural external relations for P&G. "In addition, 71 percent of African-American families are managed by a single parent — primarily mothers and grandmothers." According to Andrews, the tour aims to focus "on improving the mind, body and spirit through a renowned panel of African-American celebrities who empower the attendees by providing inspiration and encouragement as well as personal advice on ways they've overcome obstacles to find success." The influential women headlining the Philadelphia stop include (pictured, left to right) comedian Myra J, gospel singer Yolanda Adams, fitness expert Donna Richardson Joyner and rapper MC Lyte, as well as America's Next Top Model winner Eva Pigford and vocalist Regina Belle. The day-long event will also have live performances and feature individual pampering stations with makeovers, manicures and hair color consultations. While the focus is on black women, all are welcome. Andrews adds, "The goal of the program is to continue to reach out to the community in a meaningful way and enhance the lives of attendees by offering them the knowledge, inspiration and tools to make a difference. We feel fulfilled and pleased when they leave the event feeling refreshed, happy and inspired to make positive life changes."
