Was it really 17 years ago that a skinny Will Smith laid down this little rhyme: "My DJ is the most from coast to coast / The magnificent Jazzy Jeff wack destroyer / Cutting up records like a samurai warrior"?
Yes, it was, but Jazzy Jeff is still a prominent figure on the Philadelphia music scene. Mainly recognized for his success alongside the Fresh Prince, Jazzy Jeff has worked overtime to distinguish himself as a DJ and producer. In addition to making noise with his solo album, The Magnificent (Rapster) in 2002, Jazzy Jeff has taken his turntables to premier clubs all over Europe. To celebrate the big 4-0 this month, he's throwing a party equipped with a plethora of past and present DJ talent, including Biz Markie, Pete Rock, Baby DST, Skratch Makaniks and, of course, Jazzy Jeff himself. This party is going on and on until the break of dawn. No, really. Happy Birthday Jeff!Sat., Jan. 22, 10 p.m.6 a.m., $10 until 1 a.m., more after 1 a.m., 21+, with Maceo, Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez, Terry Hunter, Gary O and Mike Nyce, Shampoo, Seventh and Willow sts., 215-922-7500.
