So many organized bike rides put the emphasis on how far away you end up, or how many miles you put in before ending up at the place you started. Here's a ride that puts the focus on the getting there. Co-sponsored by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's Tree Tenders and the Bicycle Club of Philadelphia, this ride will spin past the site of the proposed Philadelphia Navy Yard development and through South Philadelphia with an eye toward the dendrologic, exploring the rich and, daresay, historic trees of the area. The tour will be accompanied by the odd couple of Bartlett Tree Experts and the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation, who will perhaps tussle playfully. The tour promises to be family friendly, which means though there will be no nudity, the pace will likely be leisurely.
Tree Bike Ride, Sun., Oct. 10, noon-3:30 p.m., free, starting at the Italian Fountain near the Fairmount Water Works, Kelly Drive, Fairmount Park (or join the ride at the Navy Yard gate), helmets required, bike rentals available, 215-988-8844.
