Somebody please stop Sam Adams. While most of the city knows him as the movie critic who hailed My Giant but didn't care much for The Sixth Sense, we here at City Paper despise him as the guy who ruined Pop Quiz, The Khyber's intensely rock-nerdy trivia game. If our resident intense rock-nerd wins again this Monday that will make an even 400 consecutive victories, by our count. This simply must not be allowed to happen, Philadelphia.
Yes. There are other people on his team. And surely their co-workers assuming such people work for a living have found themselves, as we often do, infuriated by the office music dork who comes strolling in on random Tuesday mornings flashing his/her winning wads of cash and interjecting Nick Drake anecdotes into what was otherwise a perfectly fine conversation about cars. But these associates, while they may be just as valuable to the success of the Pop Quiz Yankees, are not our problem. Sam is our problem. It is Sam we wish to see defeated.
And, lest you mistake this for mere feigned loathing, meant to backhandedly praise CP's Greil Dorcus, know this: We are offering a bounty a stack of fair-to-crappy CDs we have lying around the office to the team that knocks Sam and his trivial buddies off their homemade thrones. Somebody please destroy him.
Pop Quiz, Mon., Aug. 16, 9 p.m., $5 per person (2 to 4 people per team), The Khyber, 56 S. Second St., 215-238-5888.
