The Holmes Brothers

blues

Blues, soul, gospel, R&B, country: The Holmes Brothers (Sherman and Wendell, plus longtime drummer Popsy Dixon) can do it all. Old masters with no need to flaunt their mastery, the trio, who've been playing together since 1979, can take a song as often sung as "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" and make it seem as if it were written yesterday, and make Collective Soul's "Shine" sound as if it were conceived over a plate of barbeque in the Eisenhower era. Though previous recordings have found them in a more reflective mood, the aptly named Simple Truths (Alligator) sets out to rock the rafters; even the sad songs move at a clip suggesting happiness is no more than a few minutes away.

Fri., Feb. 20, 7:30 and 10:30 p.m., $15, with Beaucoup Blue, Tin Angel, 20 S. Second St., 215-928-0978.
