I don't want to pile on here, but how about the sudden demise of GoInternet, the sorry Internet company that unfortunately has graced Old City with their ridiculous presence for way too long ["Gone Internet," Daryl Gale, Jan. 29, 2004].
Here's the Tragedy.
What is the motto of the GoInternet story? Let's see. That crime pays? This company was repeatedly reprimanded, fined and sued and they are still in business, according to Daryl Gale's article.
So what did all those primarily African-American employees learn from working at GoInternet?
Well, let's see. That it's all right to set up a bogus business in a neighborhood that doesn't want it, and steal from countless folks that don't need your so-called service for as long as you possibly can. Just as long as you're not arrested, or in this case, caught.
Do you think all the1,000-plus laid off employees will put their GoInternet experience on their résumés?
Here's the Triumph.
In this town where our leaders appear to be oblivious while rich slicksters steal away, at least City Paper's Daryl Gale had the guts to tell it like it is, even after being threatened to stop telling it. Where was the rest of the press on this one?
As they used to say back in the day, right on baby! Write on!

Thank god this saga is finally over. Mr. Gale needs a new dragon to slay. His proclamations early on regarding this story that he was the only one covering it -- well, it was for good reason. He was barking up the wrong tree from the wrong side. He initially was on the side of the unfairly trod-upon minority employees and against the big, bad neighborhood alliances. The follow-up stories were laughably self-congratulatory in Mr. Gale's "Can you believe that no one else is covering this groundbreaking story?" attitude. It seems to me that Mr. Gale didn't really follow the story as much as try to create a more interesting story than was really there. I suggest less trying to find a cause to get behind and more straightforward reporting. Maybe then he'll hit the mark and be a bit less sanctimonious. I'm just glad that GoInternet is finally Gone and this chapter in Mr. Gale's writing life can be put to rest.

I just want to thank you for the article you wrote in the City Paper this week on Safe Streets ["Cutting Corners," Amy L. Webb, Feb. 5, 2004].
Since Safe Street's inception, I have tried to keep abreast of its status and I even questioned the mayor on its cost-ineffectiveness at a Young Americans PAC event.
I hope you and the paper will continue to report on the issue.

Due to a reporting error in last week's review of Moshulu, the pastry chef's name was listed incorrectly. The current pastry chef is Michael Zandergeest.
Due to an editing error, a pull quote in last week's Political Notebook mistakenly stated that there is a vacancy for executive director of the Fairmount Park Commission. The vacancy is for the executive director of Fairmount Park.
City Paper apologizes for the errors.
