Not for nothing did Michelle Malone take on a new nickname. Sure, she had a touch of the blues as far back as her 1987 debut, New Experience, but her best work has tended to straddle the line between folk and rock. With the new Stompin' Ground (Daemon), credited to Moanin' Michelle Malone and the Low-Down Georgia Revue, she wades further into the blues without playing down her rock roots. It's her best collection of songs since 1997's Beneath the Devil Moon, and the muscled arrangements make it all go down like sweet Southern Comfort. Like her label boss Amy Ray, Malone excels when she sticks to the harder stuff. "Preacher's Daughter" and "Camera" rumble admirably, and "Honeysuckle Lullaby" dips her stickiest pop hook into a brace of banjos and slide guitar. Keep on moanin'.
Thu., Dec. 11, 8 p.m., $18-$20, all ages, with Erin McKeown, The Point at Manayunk Station, 4401 Cresson St., 866-468-7615.
