When I was little, I always wanted to live in a gingerbread house. I would crawl through the gumdrop door into a hallway lined with candy canes. The floor throughout the house would be made of icing, hardened so that I could skate through the house on it, pausing to break off a piece whenever I got a jones for sweets. The stairs would be chocolate-covered pretzel rods; the drapes, made of marzipan.
Well, OK, Hansel and Gretel sort of beat me to it. But if you ever had that fantasy, you can look at what your life might be like at this year's Peddler's Village Gingerbread House Competition and Display. This nationally known contest offers $4,800 in prizes under different categories, geared towards everyone from amateurs and children to those able to build scale models of landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and the White House. The winners have already been announced, but the houses will be on show for the whole holiday season.
Peddler’s Village Gingerbread House Display, through Jan. 8, free, Peddler’s Village, Routes 202 and 263, Lahaska, 215-794-4000.
