Married life ain't so grand. So says Robert, the main character in Stephen Sondheim's hit musical Company. Bobby is a bachelor who celebrates his 35th birthday with a group of apparently unhappily married friends. After taking a long, hard look at the relationships his friends have with their better halves and hearing their tales of affairs and drugs, he decides that he doesn't want to be married. Eventually, however, and predictably, Bobby realizes that he does want someone to love.
In a pair of Thanksgiving weekend performances, Trinity Opera Theater takes a stab at one of Sondheim's most popular shows, one that Dean Jones and Elaine Stritch first made famous. Trinity Opera Theater, in its seventh season and with shows like The Barber of Seville and Amahl and the Night Visitors under its belt, has cast Steven MacDonald as Bobby, Carol Dennenberg as Joanne and Kristin Sims as Sarah in a fully staged production. Director Steve Pollack calls his performers "extremely talented and very funny." So here's to the ladies (and gentlemen) who lunch!
Company, Fri.-Sat., Nov. 28-29, 8 p.m., $15, Trinity Center, 22nd and Spruce sts., 215-732-2515.
