Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson, two of Alvin Ailey’s juiciest dancers, teamed up back in 1994 as artistic directors of their own small dance troupe, which they called Complexions. Principal choreographic honors go to Rhoden, with performing focus on Richardson, whose virtuosity and stage magnetism have made him Rhoden’s muse. Complexions is definitely a plural entity, honoring the founding duo’s heritage with Ailey, as well as reflecting their own wide-ranging interest in artistic expression that crosses every boundary -- race, religion and culture. Don’t think dance technique only. This outfit tinkers with film, music, improv, fashion, street culture -- even poetry.
In addition to the high-powered founders, the company boasts Sarita Allen, a great lady of the Ailey troupe, as artist-in-residence -- plus the truly legendary Carmen de Lavallade, one of the most honored women in modern dance history, as artistic adviser. Local dance fans should watch for sensational former Philadanco dancer Antonio Carlos Scott, who’s been principal dancer and resident composer since Complexions began. But leaving the fancy pedigree behind, keep in mind that what these folks do best isn’t to rattle a résumé but to dance.
Complexions, Sat., Nov. 15, 8 p.m,. and Sun., Nov. 16, 3 p.m., $31-$39, Annenberg Center, 3680 Walnut St., 215-898-3900.
