Sacrilegious Sequels

theater

Have you ever wondered whether the apostles (and their Old Testament counterparts) misplaced some of their stories before putting the final touches on the Bible? Perhaps in their miracle-induced haze they simply couldn't get a hold on a few details -- like God's vagina, or Adam's incompatibility with his rib, Eve. Now, centuries later, Gary Day has produced a sextet of tales to supplement the good book. Day wrote and will direct Sacrilegious Sequels, which his theater company, The Daylight Zone, is producing this month. We primarily focus on gay-themed material, which is part of the sacrilege of this production, by implication, says Day. This biblical-figures episode of Where Are They Now? deals with a host of touchy religious topics, including His gender. Denise Shubin will fill the shoes of Yahweh, lord of heaven, and her counterpart, Lucifer, will be played by Carmen Salas. Because these pillars of (im)morality typically dwell on wisps of vapor or in vats of boiling rock, the set is purposely sparse so as not to distract the audience from the real action. Like the original biblical stories, be prepared for both sinfully pleasing comedy and tear-your-guts-out drama in this journey through the cosmos. —Keegan O'Connor

Sacrilegious Sequels, Oct. 16-Nov. 1, $15-$20, Shubin Theater, Fourth and Bainbridge sts., 215-336-1482.
