Roy Hargrove's RH Factor

It shouldn't have come as a surprise to anyone that trumpeter Roy Hargrove, former "Young Lion" and keeper of the post-bop flame, would release a neo-soul record -- he's always proclaimed a true affinity for black music of every form. But Hard Groove (Verve), featuring a conglomerate ensemble he calls RH Factor, does more than slip a toe into the pool. Guests like Common, Q-Tip, D'Angelo and Erykah Badu provide some of the album's most obvious hooks, but the real backbone is Hargrove and his band, laying down honest-to-goodness funk and simmering R&B: analog, unpolished and in real time. In some ways this show should be a sort of homecoming: Hargrove may be from Texas and living in New York City but the sound he's adopted on Hard Groove is pure Philly, no question. Don't be surprised if some local heavies decide to drop in and say hello.

Fri., June 20, 9 p.m., $28.50-$30, with Me’Shell NdegéOcello, The TLA, 334 South St., 215-336-2000.
