June 5-11, 2003 mixpicks Seedy Acres Fundraising Garden Party and Birdhouse AuctionEven if you can't quite make a little birdhouse in your soul, now's the time to find space for one in your backyard. This weekend, Seedy Acres Community Garden in Northern Liberties is throwing a fundraising bash to help them afford to hold onto their valuable park land -- some of which has already fallen into the hands of various developers. The park, situated on the block at Leithgow and Poplar streets, is not only one of the oldest shared gardens in the city -- dating back more than 20 years -- but still plays host to 35 gardeners whose care has maintained it as a haven for species of birds, such as woodpecker and mockingbird, rarely seen elsewhere in the smog. As in previous years, the Northern Liberties Neighbors Association wants to prove that how you help out community residents (avian or otherwise) reflects on your neighborhood. So artists including Kait Midgett, who owns Project Room, and abstract painter Bruce Pollock have worked to design birdhouses, which will be auctioned off to aid Seedy Acres' fight for survival. While enjoying a vodka snow cone at the fundraiser, you can bid on one of these beauties, which are available at somewhat-less-than-N.-Liberties-properties price tags.
