May 29-June 4, 2003 artpicks Telling the TruthInterAct's Writing Aloud program has been treating audiences to stories by local authors read by local actors since 1999. For its last of the year, the theme is "Gambling With the Truth," featuring stories by Sandy Crimmins, Beth Goldner and Ernest Hemingway/PEN Award-winning writer Justin Cronin. Kathryn Petersen will read Cronin's "Mammals," a tense, loss-ridden story of a family vacation taken from his debut novel Mary and O'Neil. Drucie McDaniel will read Crimmins' "The Reading," about a writer who experiences a bad reading of her work (a bit of pressure for McDaniel, perhaps). Finally, Hayden Saunier tackles Goldner's "Plan B," about an anxious airplane passenger who attaches more grave meanings to the plane's warning bells. Program director David Sanders says the actors have a chance to work with the stories well in advance, and the actors and writers pair off for an exchange of perspective. "What's been really satisfying is that we knew this was a good experience for the writers, but it's been interesting to see how much the actors really enjoyed it too," says Sanders. Next January, look for a move to monthly readings, and maybe an evening or two devoted to opening chapters of novels. Writing Aloud, Mon., June 2, 7 p.m., $10, The Adrienne, 2030 Sansom St., 215-568-8079. Reservations recommended.
