May 14-20, 2003 music icepackSad, this. Alex and Bliwa's floating avant eclec-tronic event, the one-year-old Rashomon Effect, hosts its final round, while its live lo-fi flagship act, the four-year-old Hoopty Heaven, takes a much-needed break. (Alex is moving to Brazil.) Rashomon offered supreme experimental sounds in 'soundclash format' -- an intelligent, strictly sonic thing (not a bar thing) where performers played short sets back-to-back. It was, says Bliwa, 'part collaboration, part battle.' The finale is May 17 at The Parlor (1170 S. Broad). Promptly at 9 p.m., Nuri hits the stage, with Andrew Cauthen's Rumoured, b-day boy Mike McDermott's Mikronesia, DJs Erin Anderson and John Shenk, videographer Kaboom and Hoopty Heaven playing til sunshine.... Painter Perry Milou, tired of hunting gallery space, opens his own at 128 S. 18th in ye old Rindelaub's spot to show off local easelers as well as his own splashy stuff. Opening party is May 21.... Not to be outdone, producer Edan Cohen bashes at his Soundgun Studio May 17 with readings (Matthew Derby's Super Flat Times), bands (the eerie, elegant Buried Beds) and comedy (the infamous Tim and Eric). T&E, by the way, will debut wacky new works on the Jumbotron at June 7's Field Day music festival on Long Island (hoping to make dour Radiohead laugh). Speaking of Eric Wareheim, his band SOLA is wrapping up a three-song 7-inch.... Jena Osman and Aaron Levy's Slought series premieres the Salome-based multimediated dance Seven Veils (Poetry in Moving Media) May 17 at the Rotunda with music by Alexander DeVaron.... Whowhatwhere: At the same time as Philly-born Joan Jett got her lifetime achievement award at the Fifth Annual Philadelphia Music Awards at Finnigan's Wake Tuesday, Bill Clinton got donations for his presidential library at Ed Rendell's meet-and-greet at Shampoo. (Before that, Clinton dined at Cuba Libre.) Philly's own Motown Funk Brother Jack Ashford signs DVDs of Standing In the Shadow of Motown at TLA Video's Fourth St. store May 17 at 6 p.m. Method Man goes Def Jam Vendetta crazy on May 15 at Gamestop (2437 S. 24th) before he hits Chrome. Phillyite producer Lee Daniels'movie with Kevin Bacon and Eve,The Woodsman, films all over West Philly starting this week. If you can't catch Daniels this time around, he's looking to pull a Shyamalan. He's shooting his next, Shadowboxer (with Alicia Keys and Anjelica Huston), here in October. And Jerseyite Wyclef Jeancelebrates Haiti Flag Day at Pegasus with his Sound System party May 16.... New Wave Cafe has a swanky new chef, Main Line-bred Jason Seraydarian of Little Nell Hotel and Gonzo fame.... Philly's ambi-tranceLotus have signed to Harmonized in order to release Germination, a summer live CD.... Television without Pity, the sardonic A/V dot.com takes over Buffalo Billiards May 17 for a popcorn-and-Pilsner bash. They'll have plenty to say about Philly boyKevin Friel's now five-seasons-old TLC show A Dating Story, which is casting and shooting here May 29 to June 9. 'We reinvented the show to be hipper, more informative and romantic,' says Friel, who is looking for singles 25-35. (Call 215-928-1414 x7041.) Not to be outdone, TLA Releasing delivers the reality-satire The Wedding Video starring ex-members of The Real World. For something more unreal, dig local movie-mogul Andrew McElhinney curating monthly first Tuesday 'Peepshows' at 700 Club and a new WYBE Wednesday at Warmdaddy's featuring local filmmaker stuff.... When Ahmir Thompson isn't busy with The Roots(taping Indre's Y-100 show with Cody ChesnuTT, touting their punk-hop hit 'The Seed' ) he can be found in the pages of Rolling Stone's 'American Icon' issue. (Same issue's got a cool article with Philly philanthropist Bernard Spain talking about that totem of the '70s, the Smiley Face, that he and brother Murray minted backinnaday). Also in print, The Kindred Papers, a Hidden Beach label-backed mag edited by Kindred's Aja Graydon and Fatin Dantzler with bits from Jill Scott. The married sweet-soulsters have been shooting a secret new vid in West Philly and the Five Spot before heading to the St. Lucia Jazz Festival.... The 215 Fest (Oct. 8-12) announced its big fish bookings: A. M. Homes (Things You Should Know) and Rolling Stone scribe Tour along with Neal Pollack.... After last week's History Channel special on his World War II exploits (B-25 Down: Hunt For A Hero), builder/Flatspin owner Alfred Hagen brings the unlikely hit Three Swedish Sopranos to his grille May 18. Hagen's also starting a record label to record, possibly, tunes he's written with Paul Evans for Evans Pine HillBillies and guest Sally Starr.... B-days and weddings? DJs Brendan O and Joey Blanco celebrated such at their weekly Soul Travelin' party. Kait Midgett's The Project Room gallery spot celebrated four years and its new nonprofit status at a benefit catered and staffed by NoLib-area bars. And congrats to scribe/DJ Dan Buskirk for marrying art teacher Keri Farrow....
