Tour de Force

With spring comes the return of green grass, green leaves and green cars. Not green like that putrid lime Volkswagen that your neighbor just bought, green as in eco-friendly, like the 30-plus low-emission and alternative-energy vehicles that are featured at the 15th annual expo, "Tour de Sol: The Great American Green Transportation Festival."

The festival, organized by the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA), is the longest-running green vehicle showcase and competition in the United States. The festival features cars, trucks, motorcycles and buses powered by everything from biodiesel fuels to solar power, with all shades of hybrid in between. The vehicle prototypes were designed by major automakers, university and high-school students and individuals who will compete in a road rally for prizes, including the coveted Greenest Vehicle and Most Fuel Efficient awards. Students from West Philadelphia High School will be competing in car No. 22, the "Hybrid Hippo."

Tour de Sol kicks off in Burlington, N.J., with an open house on May 10. Attendees will be able to watch as the competitors go through qualifying tests for the road rally. Besides the actual vehicles, there will be demonstrations of hydrogen production and several drivable concept vehicles from GM and DaimlerChrysler.

If you can't make it to Jersey (or are just scared of our neighbor to the east), not to worry. Tour de Sol is coming to Philly on May 13. The cars will be featured as part of a full-blown street festival, with food, games, music and other entertainment.

Tour De Sol: The Great American Green Transportation Festival, open house, Sat., May 10, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Riverfront Promenade, Burlington, N.J.; street festival, Tue., May 13, 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m., 16th St. and the Parkway, 413-774-6051, www.tourdesol.org.
