Institutions? Everybody’s got a different view on what makes something a treasure. But I have a spot in my tiny heart for entrepreneurs who did their thing (and did it well) before the so-called Philly Renaissance that started in the ’90s and never stopped. (That’s right, Jr. Clubfucks, there was a Philly nightlife before you littered it with your short-attention-span-having, low-cut-jean-wearing, VIP-wanting asses.) It’s come to my attention several hallowed spots may go through big changes. I’ll get to those in future weeks. This week, let’s talk about Knave of Hearts, Ty Bailey’s venerated South Street restaurant. Since 1975, Knave’s been the romantic night-and-day spot and lounge (the private Love Lounge was named before everyone called any old thing a "lounge"). Bailey and his missus closed Knave last summer (had one baby, a second is due soon) but reopened soon after, renovating Knave, enclosing the garden café, restarting the famed Sunday brunches. "We’re busy and ready for business. We’re booming when the crowd is down there. But I think we’re ready to experience real life," says Bailey. So. Bailey is amenable to selling Knave and its accompanying addresses. "We’re not giving it away," he says, keeping the price off the record. "But everything is negotiable." His realtor: famed ex-Revival owner David Cohen. I pray Knave stays open. Look up the number if you got cash. (I’m not a phone book.) More later.… When not recording their debut and gearing up for Memorial Day at the Mummers Museum, Helen Back & the Str8 Razors play Doc Watson’s May 9 with the wonderfully punkish Japanese band MimiRock, whose own debut, Whah!, kicks ass.… Leaving soon is Adam Di Angelo, the producer behind Fingernail and The Needles, whose promised CD EP Choc Toxique (555 Recordings) is Di Angelo’s swan song. "I’m looking for greener pastures," says the Jersey native, who heads home ("I miss the ocean") before he makes his way to an Italian sabbatical. "Philadelphia and I need to spend some time apart."… Coming back is Oscar-winner Rob Daly (well, sorta -- he was a sound effects editor for Bowling for Columbine) and his hard techno Plastic Eaters with their first Philly show in seven months with Cream Chargers, May 9 at The Fire. Along with being courted by Tricky and his new label for a record and European co-tour, the Eaters get their time on screen, having shot a Heineken ad where they pose and stage-dive to the sound of their "Going on a Mission."… Ogbonna HaginsPhilly Word mag (the bible of local hip-hop) morphs Thursday into a news/politics/lifestyle forum, a 50,000-circulation newspaper for 18-35s. More soon.… DJ Ivan Ross debuts "Phase" at The Five Spot May 14, an intimate electro environ starring Tim Motzer, Nu Cultures (now with Mark Boyce and Barry Meehan), Vanishing Peoples of the Earth and Ross’ own live jawn starring Gravy Thomas and Mica McIntyre.… Lest anyone think he was jesting in the last Icepack, David Carroll will really auction off bits of Bar Noir’s treasured (but sadly broken) antique church pew May 13, with me, DJ A.D., spinning. All monies go to a charity of BN’s choice.… 215 Fest’s Mary Richardson Graham hosts "Up All Night: Writers Recall Their Childhood Fears" with Darin Strauss, John K. Hodgman, Hanna Tinti and Whitney Pastorek at Rosenbach, May 9 for both First Person week and to raise cash for October 2003’s 215.… Marathon Commerce Lounge celebrates the sunshine with Summer Sunset every Friday happy hour starting at May 9’s bash with DJs Schoolly D and Casey.… Philadelphia Fish & Company GM Laurie Townsend gets a Citizens Crime Commission of the Delaware Valley award at the Bellevue Hotel’s award luncheon May 14 for chasing a deadbeat customer, who was found by police to be involved in a handful of famed local fraud cases.… Cherry Street’s American Friends Service Committee Peacebuilding and Demilitarization Program hosts a Beats For Peace jam May 12 at The Electric Factory with Schoolz of Thought, Supernatural, Pharoahe Monch, Rennie Harris’ Puremovement dancers and more.… Two of my fave local chanteuses, Mary Ellen Desmond and Meg Clifton, release their tributary Peggy Lee/Rosemary Clooney CD at Chris’ Jazz Cafe May 9 with Larry McKenna, John Swana and company.… Tronik Kru (DJs Armen, Brkdwn, Cuebik and Boo -- a bunch of Saint Jack’s regulars) go drum-and-bass massive May 9 at Silk City.… May 14 b-days: the Dumpsta Players celebrate their sixth anniversary at Bob and Barbara’s; their seventh "Prom Trash" party is May 14’s "Prom Trash Vegas" starring Mitzi Meisner, Harold Hooligan and Kina Kookleman from outta town. Happy also to rock photographer/mustache man Scott Weiner and to builder/Philly icon Ed Bacon, who celebrated his b-day with kids Michael and Kevin (soon to be filming a movie with wife Kyra Sedgwick in West Philly) at the Arts & Business Council’s 2003 Awards Luncheon at the Convention Center. Also, a sad goodbye to Giovinna, the mom of After Hours hairdressing magnate Scott Chestnut and an old dear mama to me.
