Nederlands Dans Theater II

For some, as George Bernard Shaw observed, youth is wasted on the young, but not so for the individuals who comprise Nederlands Dans Theater II, a group of dancers ages 17 to 22. The troupe is somewhat of a training camp for choreographer/artistic director Jiri Kylián, who also leads the highly regarded Nederlands Dans Theater. About two-thirds of NDT spent time in NDT II. Kylián puts both groups through much the same practice regimen, so even the junior corps is schooled in techniques that emphasize stamina and flexibility.

With NDT II, Kylián likes to mix up his choice of choreographers, using established names as well as emerging dance makers to provide the ensemble with a broad spectrum of contemporary dance styles. Randy Swartz, artistic director of Dance Celebration, co-presenter of NDT II's Philadelphia appearance, has been crowing about this particular event since the start of the season. Rightly so, since come showtime, even though these are minor leaguers, we can expect performances to showcase NDT's trademark high level of expertise and attention to detail. Plus, there's the added attraction of youthful exuberance, which surely offers its own special delight.

Nederlands Dans Theater II, Thu.-Sat., May 8-10, $28-$36, Annenberg Center, 3680 Walnut St., 215-898-3900.
