Stango Gallery opening

Tyler grad John Stango's work is easily recognizable: big, bright, loud and infused with a pop sensibility that has often gotten him compared to that other guy who painted brightly colored images of celebrities and brand-name labels. Stango started making T-shirts in 1985 in his Philly studio, and soon had them for sale in department stores. He moved from clothing to canvas and is now known for his paintings of pop icons (Allen Iverson, Wonder Woman, Madonna) and consumer culture (images marked with names like Prada and Gucci). Now Stango is opening his own gallery in Manayunk, a sort of homecoming for the Philly-boy-turned-international-art-scenester. The gallery opens Thursday night with a reception and unveiling of Stango's latest collection. In honor of his local roots, 10 percent of all proceeds from sales on Thursday evening will be donated to Tyler. So you'll know that big old painting of James Dean or Muhammad Ali you buy will help benefit some future pop artists.

Stango Gallery opening, Thu., May 8, 7-9 p.m., free, 4203 Main St., Manayunk, call 215-413-7501, ext. 5 for reservations.
