May 1- 7, 2003 mixpicks Dig for Treasures
Flea market followers and bargain buyers, it is time to sharpen your sale senses. This Saturday, the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology is hosting a first-class clearance at second-hand prices. The annual Dig for Treasures event offers a unique opportunity to rummage through donated items including books, art, clothing and collectibles while supporting the educational programs at the museum through your purchases. The valuables will be found throughout several rooms in the museum and are sure to intrigue adults and children. For those wholl recognize a pottery bargain even as its being taken off the wheel, therell be a rare demonstration by master potter Jagdish Pandit from Bihar, India (pictured). Pandit is widely acclaimed in India for his monumental animal sculptures rarely seen outside of his native country. His sculptures and votive oil lamps will be on display and for sale. Following the demonstration, Minhazz Majumdar, a writer and translator from New Delhi, will lead a discussion and slide show about traditional arts and innovative crafts of India. Once youve dug out your final discounts, venture upstairs to see the newly installed "Worlds Intertwined" exhibit tracing the meshing of ancient civilizations thousands of years ago -- another great deal, since admission to everything is by a suggested donation of only $5. Dig for Treasures, Sat., May 3, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Jagdish Pandit pottery demonstration, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; Minhazz Majumdar slide show, 1-2 p.m.; $5 ($2.50 for seniors and students), Rainey Auditorium, University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archeology and Anthropology, 3260 South St., 215-898-4000.
