May 1- 7, 2003 artpicks "Back to the Future" at SkateNerd GallerySkateboarders get called a lot of undeserved names: punks, slackers, burnouts, losers. Two local boarders have words of their own: nerds and artists. Brian Nugent and Metal (thatâs the name he gives) named their gallery on North Second Street SkateNerd as a self-deprecating way to get past the stereotypes about skateboarders. The pair created the gallery a year ago to showcase the creative side of skateboarding through art and "soft goods" like silk-screened skate shirts and shoes. The tiny space in the storefront gallery has several racks of shirts, along with hand-painted boards and custom messenger bags made by building co-tenant R.E. Load Baggage. There is also a variety of skating media such as magazines, books and videos for sale, including issues of skate magazines from decades past. The real focus for Nugent and Metal, though, is the actual gallery. The back wall of the room is where they display their monthly exhibits, featuring art from across skateboard culture. Past exhibits have featured professional skate photographers, designers and counterculture artists. This month, SkateNerd is hosting "Back to the Future," its first group show, inviting back some artists who have shown their work at the gallery before as well as several newcomers. The 16 artists are each creating a 12-by-12-inch piece. Nugent said the goal is to create an exhibit with uniformity of size but a variety of media. Featured artists include skate shoe designer Shawn Carboy, professional photographers Ryan Gee and Kelly Ryan and artists Dave Delaney and Craig Metzger. “Back to the Future,” May 2-31; reception, Fri., May 2, 6-9 p.m.; free, SkateNerd Gallery, 142 N.
