April 24-30, 2003 musicpicks Ellis Paul
³I"ve never been into putting a label on what I do,² Ellis Paul says. ³I just see myself as a storyteller, an observer.² He"s used to being called a ³sensitive singer/songwriter² -- with all of its not-always-flattering implications. Paul"s 1998 CD, Translucent Soul, was a brutal chronicle of a marriage gone bad (his), while the now-happily partnered singer says his latest, The Speed of Trees (Rounder), is about ³laying down roots and finding your place in the world.² Known as much for his catchy pop hooks as for his folk roots, Paul is working on a covers album with buddy/South Jersey native Vance Gilbert (who happens to be the actual subject of the song ³Translucent Soul²): ³With Vance, it"s like two-plus-two equals three, so we decided this would be a fun, no-pressure project.² While the Farrelly Brothers pegged Paul"s ³The World Ain"t Slowin" Down² for their Me, Myself & Irene soundtrack, he"s gotten little mainstream attention -- a decided non-issue for the singer, whose live shows ooze with an easy rapport sometimes hidden behind his intense song lyrics. After 20 years in Boston -- where he"s racked up countless Boston Music Awards -- Paul recently returned to his native Maine and lives on a 9-acre farm, ³part of the laying-down-roots thing,² as he says. Sat., April 26, 7 and 10 p.m., $20, with A.J. Swearingen, Tin Angel, 20 S. Second St., 215-928-0770.
