Califone/Brokeback

Why bother going to see two bands when you can see dozens? There may be only two names on the bill for Thursday night"s Bryn Mawr show, but if you know either of them, you know you"re in for much more than a pair of different sounds. Califone (pictured) has turned up on stage as everything from an alt-country septet to a noise-dabbling duo; on their new Quicksand/Cradlesnakes (Thrill Jockey), they frequently sound like both at once, delivering on the promise only hinted at by Wilco"s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (Nonesuch). Seeing as Douglas McCombs is Brokeback"s only real member, the mainly instrumental outfit (which frequently relies on contributions from members of Tortoise and Eleventh Dream Day, who also count McCombs as a member) can turn out anything from Glassian electro-minimalism to lulling indie pop. Being from Chicago, where intermingling is practically the law of the land, Califone"s and Brokeback"s members have shown up on each other"s records as well, meaning this show will likely be less like two separate sets than one continuously evolving, ever-changing festival of noise.
