The Delgados

³Hate is all around/ Find it in your heart, in every waking sound,² sings Delgado Alun Woodward on ³All You Need is Hate,² the agenda-setting song from the Scottish quartet"s fourth album, Hate (Mint), without sounding particularly displeased by the observation. The album"s juxtaposition of malicious sentiments and Beatlesque orchestral glory -- courtesy of producer Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev) -- can seem like a cheap joke but, particularly on the songs where the Lennon-voiced Emma Pollock takes the lead, Hate"s ugly beauty evokes more than facile irony. The way electronic distortion creeps into ³The Light Before We Land² along with the Wall of Sound drums suggests the bloody flesh beneath pop"s perfect skin, but without privileging one over the other (they are equally true or false). Grand sentiments for a mere pop album, to be sure, but Hate doesn"t hide its ambitions; when so many bands are using revivalism as a cloak, The Delgados want to bust through history and out the other side. You can love Hate or hate it, but the band would probably rather you did both.

Thu., April 24, 7 p.m., $10-$12, all ages, with Aereogramme and Essex Green, First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 800-594-TIXX.
