April 24-30, 2003 artpicks The Plotz Retrospective
When people think of zine culture, they usually think of publications of a Xeroxed, hardcore punk nature -- like Fugazi on paper. They do not usually think of Yiddish language and a mod, kitschy, feminine outlook. Not unless they’re thinking of Barbara Rushkoff, pop magazine writer (People, etc.), wife of author Douglas Rushkoff (Media Virus, Coercion, Cyberia) and former Northeast Philadelphian who self-published Plotz, a wordy, funny, graphics-free edgy and urban examination of the American Jewish experience. With everything from sardonic DIY tips to weary, wit-laden post-Rothian literary bits (like a take on a new Jewish Jane Eyre, bat mitzvah and everything), the zine itself lasted 16 issues, from 1995 until 2002. But it lives on as a website (www.plotzworld.com), and is the basis for an upcoming Plotzian guide to Jewish holidays that will be published by Universe in 2004. It’s also the basis of a local art exhibit, "The Plotz Retrospective." With Rushkoff in the house for its opening, expect the retrospective to be full of quirky takes on the issues and the dishiness Plotz and its creator are known for. “The Plotz Retrospective,” April 25-Aug. 17, reception Fri., April 25, 7 p.m. (following 6 p.m. Shabbat service), The Philadelphia Museum of Jewish Art at Congregation Rodeph Shalom, 615 N. Broad St., 215-627-6747.
