Ellen DeGeneres

In 1982, New Orleans-born actor/comedian Ellen DeGeneres won Showtime’s "Funniest Person in America" contest. Over a decade later, her popular sitcom, Ellen, was at the top of the charts. But by April 1997, ready or not, a change was a-comin¹ courtesy of Ms. DeGeneres. It was "G-Day,! the night her screen persona, Ellen Morgan, made history, becoming the first openly gay leading character on television. Ending speculation about her real-life sexual orientation and that of her TV identity, DeGeneres flipped the script with her Peabody Award-winning coming-out episode. That famous announcement caused quite a stir, as the record-breaking 46-million-strong throng of boob-tube watching, TV-dinner-eating couch potatoes began to turn "that show with the lesbian! off. Citing diminished ratings, ABC canceled Ellen but remember, it’s her penchant for making everyone laugh that she valuesthe most. Without her brave move six years ago, there would be no Will & Grace and there probably wouldn¹t be a lesbian character on ER either. Rock on Ellen.

Tue., April 15, 8 p.m., $38.50-$47.50 (a portion of the proceeds will benefit Greenpeace and International World Wildlife Fund), with Karen Kilgariff, Tower Theater, 69th and Ludlow sts., 215-336-2000.
