River North Chicago Dance Company

A handful of modern dance companies get invited back over and over again to the Annenberg's Dance Celebration series. River North Chicago Dance Company is high on that list. The reason is simple: The theater fills up. This is definitely an audience-friendly company. For this week's visit, Dance Celebration commissioned a world premiere from River North using American composer Richard Rodgers' music. "The Sweetest Sounds" takes its name from a Rodgers' song and is choreographed by Frank Chaves, River North artistic director (formerly a member of the wildly popular 1980s Philadelphia jazz dance group Waves.) The jazz-based modern dance style of River North should perfectly match the mood of great old ballads like "My Funny Valentine" and "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered," just two songs Chaves chose for the dance. The program will range widely through the modern dance repertory River North performs so effortlessly. They'll perform work by Ashley Roland, well known to the Annenberg series as BodyVox co-artistic director, and major innovator Daniel Ezralow, a Momix alum. Keep your eyes open for two dancers with Philadelphia connections: Clay Loveland grew up in Moorestown, N.J., and danced in the Philadelphia area, and Monique Haley studied at University of the Arts and with Philadanco.

River North Chicago Dance Company, Thu.-Sat., April 10-12, $28-$36, Annenberg Center, 3680 Walnut St., 215-898-3900.
