April 10-16, 2003 artpicks Curtis Opera Theatre's French Comic One ActsAfter acing Maurice Ravel's L'Enfants et les Sortilèges last year, Curtis Opera Theatre comes back with two more one-act comic operas from France, fully staged and in the language George Bush just can't stand to hear reporters speak. Ravel's droll farce L'Heure Espagnole (The Spanish Hour) finds young wife Concepcion deftly balancing the demands of two lovers, a husband and a hunky moving man who just happens by. Francis Poulenc's gender-bending Les Mamelles de Tirésias (Tirésias' Breasts), an out-there absurdist fantasy to a text by Guillaume Apollinaire, may change the way you look at balloons and baby carriages forever. The operas are double cast from Curtis' strong student roster, with Alexis Barthelemy and Fiona Murphy sharing Concepcion, Alyson Cambridge and Rachael Garcia handling Thérèse/Tirésias, and sturdy baritones Howard Reddy and Dimitrie Lazich each taking on three roles Friday and Saturday. Rossen Milanov conducts the Curtis Symphony and Hans Nieuwenhuis directs.
