Jazz Violin Summit

"Jazz violin" -- do the words make you tremble? They shouldn't, in this day and age. Today's breed of violin improvisers may include the usual sawers and sweet-talkers, but there are also thoughtful souls among them, schooled in classical technique and soaked in jazz spirit. The most famous is Regina Carter, who has worked with every type of jazz icon and more than a few from the world of pop. Next month Verve will release Paganini: After a Dream, the result of Carter's extraordinary rendezvous in Genoa with "Il Cannone," the Paganini violin. (She's the only jazz musician to have touched it.) Carter shares this date with the fine Philly violinists Diane Monroe, most recently seen with Uri Caine, and John Blake, whose dual allegiances to R&B and "new music" have always demonstrated his range. They'll be backed by a first-rate trio featuring pianist Kenny Barron.

Fri., April 4, 8 p.m., $35 (concert only), $150 (open bar, buffet dinner, dessert reception, concert), Four Seasons Hotel, One Logan Square, 215-829-9522.
