There is, Vienna Teng admits, a bit of a star-is-born thing about her career path: Classically trained pianist/singer/computer geek takes job as software engineer after college, not-so-secretly harboring hopes of a music career. Nights are spent gigging at San Francisco coffee shops, leading to an in-depth feature on NPR, followed by a phone call from David Letterman, then an indie contract and the release of her debut CD, Waking Hour (Virt). In August of last year, 24-year-old Teng bagged the day job for good. "I did it all a bit backwards, but it seems to be working," Teng says. "All I ever wanted was to share my music. How that happened wasn't an issue." With the kind of flowing, dramatic, utterly melodic pop that brings to mind Sarah McLachlan -- or a less-tortured Tori -- the silken-voiced Teng has gotten used to the inevitable comparisons. "If people take my music into their hearts, I think I'll stand out among the crowd," she says. Thu., April 3, 8 p.m., $12, with James Yorkston, The Point, 880 W.
