Matthew Shipp/ Khan Jamal

You'd be hard-pressed to imagine a jazz pianist as wildly diverse and inventive as Matthew Shipp. Check the longing lyricism of New Orbit, the frenetic rhythms of Nu Bop, the lucid electronics of Equilibrium or his new collaboration, Antipop Consortium vs. Matthew Shipp (Thirsty Ear). Melding his improv ire with his inspirations (Cecil Taylor, Thelonious Monk, Lennie Tristano), Shipp personifies modern jazz waywardly and wonderfully. Local vibraphone legend Khan Jamal is no slouch when it comes to dedication to African-American craft ancient and avant. His oeuvre isn't huge (LPs like Infinity, Don't Take No and Cool are all worth searching for), but Jamal's back to getting busy on the recording front, issuing the lovely live CD Balafon Dance (CIMP) last year with saxophonist Jemeel Moondoc and Jamal on the banging beautiful African balafon. He also collaborated with Shipp on Antipop. Together, Jamal and Shipp can be best felt on the sly fidgeting funk of "A Knot in Your Bop" and the murky vibe-raphonic soul of "SVP."
