Munich-based The Notwist straddles that ever-shifting line between rock and electronics. On the 2002 platter, Neon Golden (re-released this year with bonus tracks on Domino), brothers Markus (vocals/guitar) and Micha (bass) Acher, with Martins Gretschmann (programming) and Messerschmidt (drums) craft drowsy pop songs that capture those fleeting moments between sleeping and waking. With the greatest of ease, The Notwist can jump from the beat/synth-driven simmer of "Consequence" to the early-'90s-style indie pop of "One With the Freaks," which wouldn't have sounded out of place on a mid-period Pavement album. Most songs fall somewhere in between, though, marrying a singsong-y pop sensibility with slow electronic grooves. The Notwist is touring with Styrofoam, a.k.a. Arne Van Petegem, whose previous releases have tended toward straight-up dark, moody electronics. But a tour with Morr Music labelmates Opiate and Lali Puna opened Van Petegem up to incorporating live vocals and instrumentation, the results of which can be heard on the soon-to-be-released I'm What's There to Show That Something's Missing.
