Ronald K. Brown/Evidence

Ronald K. Brown is a master storyteller. But in Brown’s case, the stories are live-action tales told through the motions of his company, called Evidence. All of Brown’s works draw on gestures rooted in traditions of West Africa as well as contemporary American movement. By combining the old and the new he aims to shake dance off its elitist perch and place it in an understandable, expressive medium that conveys messages of social and cultural significance.

Sometimes Brown uses words to help get his point across, like in "Walking Out the Dark," which opens with a narration that states, "We must speak the truth to each other, or else stay buried in the dark." The dance that follows vividly illustrates this assertion in spare segments based on an African initiation ceremony: Young members of a tribe are buried alive so that they may confront feelings of fear and isolation prior to being reborn/unearthed as adult members of their clan. In the high-energy "Upside Down," Brown considers issues of individual destiny and abuse of power brought on by the quest for wealth. Both works, which appear on Evidence’s program at the Kimmel, prove that though Brown may be anti-elitist, his thoughts run mighty deep.

Ronald K. Brown/Evidence, Fri.-Sun., March 28-30, $27-$37, Kimmel Center, 260 S. Broad St., 215-893-1999.
