Manayunk. When was the last time I spoke the name? Like Polanski's Chinatown I vowed to never look back. Suddenly, there's Bourbon Blue, the first new restaurant to open there in a spell. And the March 13 opening of billionaire Pierre Roset's contemporary Franco-home-furnishing salon, Ligne Roset, with pal Dan Nedisson. That's worth a trip. Local pop-painter John Stango has long been the toast of South Philly, what with his "Mafia Athletic" shirts and "Chicken Man" Testa paintings. Now that he's got his own gallery in Manayunk, he's selling to sports guys and rappers -- like Charli Baltimore, whose Stango-lined digs'll be featured on MTV's Cribs any sec. There's fave Ferry-esque crooning gal, Wynne Alexander, who'll come down from her perch at Odette's to grace Kansas City Prime's piano bar every Friday with cabaret covers and originals from her CD, Knowing Love By Its Absence. And Bruce Reinfeld's Polar Creep was so psyched that the band got a Grape Street Pub drop-by from Graham Parker (who played two tunes with them) that he set up a Grape-April residency. Enough of fucking Manayunk. Congratulate expat-Philly producer Ian Cross if you see him on shore leave from L.A. -- he's working as engineer for Jam&Lewis on the next Janet Jackson CD and may even get a writing credit or two. Rich Medina was chosen for Russell Simmons' HBO/Def Poetry Jam showcase, taping last week for a due-soon program. In its first week, Freeway's LP, Philadelphia Freeway, SoundScanned 134,000 albums, debuting at No. 5. RuffFilm boss/director Rich Murray's Snipes DVD also scanned high: 60,000 in week one, a nice start to his and Chris Schwartz's music/DVD empire. (Speaking of RuffNation, onetime head lady Helen Little is now VP of R&B for WEA. I love initials.) Bleu Martini manager Ed Kivlin has left his post on Second Street to boss around the rootin'-tootin' types at Third Street's Coyote Ugly, rumored to be opening March 13. If you miss Revival as much as I, holler at Jason Cohen, one of Revival's longest-running managers who just moved back from Florida and into prime CC real estate along with his bro, David. Another guy who just got back into town, Revival bouncer Greg Watson, will now be throwing your ass out of Bar Noir. Old friends/new CDs: Timi "Dread" Tanzania -- known for his work with Timi and the Dub Warriors -- released two solos, the ragga-raving Challenger: The Healing of A Nation and an eerie electronic Upper Dubland. Then there's David E. Williams who produced androgynous goth guy Rozz Williams' just-released Accept the Gift of Sin (recorded live in Philly, in '96). David calls it "surely the most significant moment in Philly history!" Meanwhile, he's become a full-fledged member of power-electronic troupe, Deathpile, whose new CD, G.R., is out next week. Also next week is DJ Cozmic Cat's vinyl debut -- a teaming with Lorne and Jon Gill -- called From Philly with Love. The EP features Gill's house joint "Morning Glory," Lorne's ragga-fried "Sputnikked" and Coz's nu-jazzy "Flight Connect." WhoWhatWhere: comic Wayne Brady and rapper Biz Markie at Glam. God help us if it was the same night. Don't look for Robert Duvall and his dancing girlfriend at Society Hill Dance Academy as rumored in connection with Assassination Tango. They'll be stopping by some Ritz-es though, March 13. Hall & Oates had a nice time staying at the Park Hyatt at the Bellevue (honored by WBEB B101 FM, who celebrated their 40th anniversary as a "stand alone" radio station). Busy week at Indre Studios: Saliva, Daniel Lanois and Fabolous as well as local lovelies Rob Hyman (joining Dar Williams, whose new CD he produced) and Cordalene, recording new material and stuff for Facedown's Who tribute CD starring Nancy Falkow and Pat DiNizio. And I hear Burning Brides (who, like Need New Body, Mazarin, Lefty’s Deceiver and more, made Chunklet mag's "Pay to Not Play" issue) are not being treated very nicely by Audioslave, the dull alt-supergroup whose joint-tour hit here last week. GFS' J. Smooth goes "Punk N Bass" at La Tazza, March 14. Buffalo Billiards' Metropolitan Lounge starts two new weekly DJ nights: Regina Mandell's Etc. party each Tuesday and H20's Thursday lounge jam March 13. NXNW and Ropeadope Records host "Hold On, Slow Down" for the Brandywine Peace Community with Subtle Ground and Ursula Rucker March 13. Beautiful Peoples' "Urban Hang Suite" takes over Club Zero27 (720 Arch) with DJ Brendan O March 14. K-Tell and the Dumpsta kids' March 19 production "Wreck-Loose" at Bob 'n' Barb's is an autobiographical mess about Ricky Paul's homophobic Coastline b-day party. Helping him magically relive the horror are real-life participants DJs Trishy, Sara Sherr and Chatty Cathy. A shout to Ed Sciaky, the WMGK host, who, after a graceful recuperation from major surgery (to say nothing of a limo-lined night out with The Boss in Atlantic City, courtesy Steven Van Zandt), returned to his "Sunday with Springsteen" program.
