Vienna Philharmonic

They might as well make it official and change their name to the Legendary Vienna Philharmonic. It seems that overused adjective is tacked onto Vienna Philharmonic more often than not, and for once, the hype is justified. It isn"t just that this orchestra is such an extraordinary music-making machine. There is the remarkable history. A good deal of the standard repertoire was born and honed in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein, the Vienna's home since 1870, including music of Brahms, Liszt, Bruckner, Mahler and Strauss, among many others. The musicians even have custom-made instruments unique to this orchestra, further enhancing their exclusivity and individuality. And since the founding of this ensemble in 1842, the Vienna Philharmonic has retained its unique constitution, including a completely democratic administration run by the musicians.

For most of the life of the Vienna, it has also lacked a music director, instead going from one guest conductor to another. The current maestro is Nikolaus Harnoncourt, who will be on the podium for the first visit by the Vienna Philharmonic to Philadelphia in 30 years. Harnoncourt is one of the music world"s true individuals, never taking the music he plays for granted, and the same can be said of his soloist for this concert, violinist Gidon Kremer. They will team up for the Violin Concerto of Alban Berg, and Harnoncourt will also conduct the Bruckner Symphony No. 4 ("Romantic").

Wed., March 5, 8 p.m., $44-$177, The Kimmel Center, 260 S. Broad St., 215-893-1999.
