February 13-19, 2003 musicpicks Four TenorsYou've probably heard of Three Tenors, the international operatic hit. Maybe you even know Three Mo' Tenors, the African-American response that played the Kimmel a couple of weeks ago. But Four Tenors? (That's one mo' than Three Mo', for the record). Presented by the Clef Club as part of its "History of Philly Jazz" series, this concert features tenor saxophonists Jimmy Oliver, Larry McKenna, Odean Pope and Bootsie Barnes. They're all veterans of Philly's jazz culture: Each has his own identifiable sound and style. And with pianist Trudy Pitts, bassist Lee Smith and drummer Craig McIver onstage, they'll be backed by a truly hometown rhythm section. Thrill-seekers will be rewarded by this lineup, to be sure. But given the unselfish personalities involved (and the fact that this concert is produced by the aptly named Collective Voices organization), this won't be a cutting session so much as a four-part collaboration.
