Dave Burrell

Both a throwback and a prophet, Philadelphia-based pianist/composer Dave Burrell is a stride and ragtime addict, with roots that stretch back to Jelly Roll Morton. Yet his primary playing experience, since the mid-'60s, has been in the turbulent arena of free jazz. Fortunately Burrell sees no apparent contradiction in these different passions, and his music reflects an encyclopedic grasp of jazzes past, present and future. As a solo pianist especially, Burrell ranges far and wide -- so this recital, one of a number of musical interludes linked to the Art Museum's Degas exhibit, should be a survey unto itself.

Wed., Feb. 19, 5 p.m., free with museum admission, Philadelphia Museum of Art, 26th St. and the Parkway, 215-763-8100.
