February 6-12, 2003 musicpicks Napalm DeathThis is one of those bands that takes "vile! and "insidious! as a compliment. Since its formation over 20 years ago, Napalm Death has kidnapped the metal genre and dragged it to the outer limits of sound and content. Heaving an aural maelstrom almost devoid of melodic cohesion, these Brits splice hardcore, thrash and avant jazz with whirlwind drumming and industrial-strength guitars to create the unholy spawn that is grindcore (metal¹s sleazier cousin). Along the way the band has become a proving ground for talented, mad-scientist types who dig John Zorn, the Dead Kennedys and Venom equally. ND and their alum have spawned the likes of Carcass, Godflesh, Scorn, Pain Killer and Cathedral. With its revolving door lineup you never know who¹s going to show up onstage at a Napalm Death show, and since the band is part of the Art Of Noise tour this year, God knows what kind of hellacious, caterwauling bellows the band will be producing. Needless to say it will be a case of fight or flight. Sun., Feb. 9, 7 p.m., $20-$23, with Nile, Dark Tranquility, Strapping Young Lad and The Berzerker, The Trocadero, 1003 Arch St., 215-922-LIVE.
