With so many historical portraits of World War II already on the shelves, few of these books stand out from the ever-growing pack. It would take the official biographer of Winston Churchill to write a book that actually covers new ground. And so he has. Be-knighted historian Martin Gilbert has written about the Holocaust before, in no less than eight different books. At Oskar Schindler's funeral in 1974, Gilbert was struck by the impact of his story, subsequently devoting 25 years to uncovering untold stories of Jews who survived because of people who risked their own lives and freedom to help them.
