January 30-February 5, 2003 artpicks Face Time
Joyce Tenneson has had everyone from Eve Ensler to Coretta Scott King to Ed Harris pose for her. She's done dozens of covers for publications such as Time and Vogue. And she's photographed less recognizable folks, too, such as a group of Spelman College graduates and mother-and-daughter duos. Her latest book of photography is Wise Women, a collection of images of women from ages 65 to 100, and it's a stunner. Tenneson, known for her ability to give her subjects great character, has succeeded in making these women shine in front of her lens. Pentimenti asked Tenneson to choose two artists to complement her show of old and new work. She chose the late photographer Abigail R. Cohen, a local artist who passed away in 2000 yet at the age of 27 had proven herself to have great talent and insight into her craft. A book of her work, One Cycle of My Journey, includes thoughts by Tenneson and Mary Ellen Mark (with both of whom Cohen worked). Tenneson also chose Michael Goesele, a young photographer and graphic artist, to show his more conceptual, shadowy work; Goesele also designed Cohen's book. A warm sense of kismet accompanies this show, as the diversity of the work is both complemented and intensified by the personal connections among the artists. “Face to Face” reception and book-signing Thu., Jan. 30, 6-8 p.m.; exhibit runs Jan. 30-Feb. 28, Pentimenti Gallery, 133 N. Third St., 215-625-9990.
