Cherrywine

It's hard to believe it's been a decade since Digable Planets' Reachin' and their Grammy-winning hip-hop hit "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" took scat-catting rappers Butterfly and Ladybug (teamed with Philly DJ King Britt) on a whirlwind worldwide tour. Since DP busted, Britt has stayed in touch, recording Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler and his furiously funkadelic band, Cherrywine, for King's Brother from Another Planet-inspired CD, Adventures in Lo-Fi (with Native Tonguers De La Soul and Philly's Grand Agent, Bahamadia, Rich Medina and Alma Horton). Britt also delivers the debut of Cherrywine's spacy lyricism and cutting funkrockjazzhop on Bright Black (Dcide/Babygrande), due soon. Sexy, soulful and searingly guitar-trippy (think Jimi Hendrix fronting Maze), the Seattle-based Cherrywine leave no stones (neither Sly nor Rolling) unturned. Promise. Get there early for Stiffed, a band that Britt says is the freshest femme-fronted punk act "since Romeo Void" and the evening swears to be the best testament to black rock since James Blood Ulmer.

Fri., Jan. 24, 9 p.m., $10, with Stiffed and DJs King Britt and Rob Life, The Five Spot, 5 S. Bank St., 215-574-0070.
