January 16-22, 2003 artpicks New Edge Mix Performance SeriesSay you're looking to check out what's happening on the local dance scene and you're especially interested in seeing works by persons other than the usual suspects (those same ol' same ol' groups and individuals who get the lion's share of dance gigs in this town). Consider catching the New Edge Mix Performance Series at West Philly's Community Education Center. Featuring four very different choreographers, it's an opportunity to view fresh-from-the-studio selections. The evening's fare is quite a mixed bag. Amanda Diorio goes postmodern with two pieces, a solo and duet. Jessica Dellecave steps out of her familiar Supergirl persona (as seen in her P Power Performance Project) to offer "I Am Your Love Bird Singer," an improvised solo done to live sax accompaniment that takes on the themes of love and flight. Rodney Byrd, assistant director of the Sterling Dance Company, here sets a new work titled "Da Corner" -- "dedicated to anyone who has ever lost someone to the streets" -- on the up-and-coming African-American Melange Dance Project. PIMA Group, a creative ensemble that likes to combine media, sometimes in unusual ways, stays true to its mission with "Spôk," a movement-based work done to live music, video and messages from an answering machine. Right there you've got a bit of a Whitman's Sampler of local dancemakers. And there's more: For an extra treat, the program presents spoken wordsmith Ursula Rucker. As the kids like to say, "sweet." New Edge Mix Performance Series, Fri- Sat., Jan. 17-18, 8 p.m., $8-$10, Community Education Center, 3500 Lancaster Ave., 215-387-1911.
