January 9-15, 2003 musicpicks Jason Mraz/Essence
If someone tells me a record is in league with John Mayer, Jack Johnson or Nickel Creek and that I might like it, I'll slap the gums out of said person. Those names are the height of hack-alt-emotional acoustica, the new wave of the java-jiving Jewels. That said, I'm glad I tuned in to the toast of San Diego's coffee house circuit, Jason Mraz (pictured) and his debut CD Waiting for My Rocket to Come (Elektra). Despite being lumped into that gruesome group, Mraz is restrained yet not lacking in character, a laid-back vocalist more in tune with a funky, freestyley Beck -- see the master-blasting "No Stopping Us" -- rather than the vein-popped pukey pyrotechniques of Five for Fighting. Although sleeker in spots than necessary, tunes like "Who Needs Shelter" and "You and I Both" are tender, tough, raw-boned folkies neither he nor you will be ashamed of. Essence opens for Mraz at the Fire with stuff from Mariposa (Or). It's swooshy, breakfast-clubby, trip-hoppy femme fuzak -- something between Tori Amos and Moby -- that's hopefully making fun of empowered chicks with shaved heads and salvation-minded strangers with open arms rather than embracing them. Sometimes I just can't tell. Fri., Jan. 10, 7 p.m., $10, all ages, with Pete Schmidt, The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave., 267-671-9298.
