January 2- 8, 2003 mixpicks Poe ItSomewhere between the wistful ache of Nick Drake and Badly Drawn Boy's coy joys -- lyrically, vocally and musically -- is sinister but sincere singer/songwriter David Poe. That you never heard his eponymous 1997 debut shouldn't rattle you. I never bothered to listen to it until his new CD, the dramatic Late Album (Sony), hit. Suddenly, his first CD's dark bedtime-story aesthetic makes sense. He's making loud NPR-glam-chamber folk; big synth-stringed production pop tunes (like the goofball You're The Bomb) and overly theatrical, mannered Muzak (Good Lonely) so hammy you'll think he's always being sarcastic.
