December 25-31, 2002 musicpicks GoldieIn a musical subdivision known for its sturm und drang anonymity, Goldie is drum 'n' bass' most daring dramatic persona. He's just as visually arresting as he is aesthetically adventurous; he initiated the genre with 1992's Dark Rider EP as well as Metalheadz label's party nights co-starring co-genre-buster Grooverider. Sure, jungle and d'n'b have been usurped by other electronic forms (glitchcore, nu-electro) or pushed into the envelope of the mainstream via remixes. But from the anthemic to the avant-garde, few artists can match Goldie for making the most out of icey science (unless made jazzy, tribal or symphonic, d'n'b's cold jitters can get dull) as well as moving and morphing through musics not regimentally jungle. The motherfucker can spin with the diversity necessary to make a ball sweaty and messy.
