December 19-25, 2002 artpicks Traveling WaresIn case holiday shopping stresses you out (like it does me), just head to Tattooed Mom's or the 700 Club this weekend to do some fabulous last-minute shopping. Anything from hand-bound books to knitted bags, fragrant soaps to colorful wax candles, delicate dolls to exquisite earrings, you'll find a wide assortment of gifts. What's more, you'll be purchasing directly from 25 local artisans rather than feeding the major corporate mongers. The annual Traveling Wares showcase always takes place in a relaxed bar, so a pint of beer helps ease the holiday crisis. What started out as a small gathering of artists selling their specialties at Dirty Frank's 10 years ago has evolved into a popular mobile exhibit. This year, they will have appeared in seven local hang-outs, but this weekend will be the last for them and the last for holiday shoppers. "There are amazing gifts which won't be found in stores," promises Minna Aaparyti, local bookbinder who has been involved since 1994. Through word-of-mouth, the reputation of the artists' fine craftsmanship has created a loyal following, and once you see the gifts yourself, you'll understand why. Sat., Dec. 21, 4-9 p.m., 700 Club, 700 N. Second St., 215-413-3181; Sun., Dec. 22, 1-6 p.m., Tattooed Mom's, 530 South St.. 215-238-9880.
