December 12-18, 2002 mixpicks Cards by Howard WatsonWhether watercoloring the White House or donating dollars to the disadvantaged, artist Howard N. Watson is a man whose work is worth witnessing. A nationally recognized watercolorist and illustrator, Watson will be at the Reading Terminal Market this Friday, helping to sell boxes of cards with designs drawn from his paintings, to benefit the Philadelphia Committee to End Homelessness. His intricately detailed work has, in the past, graced holiday cards sent to pals of the President: Watson served as Artist in Residence at the White House during President Jimmy Carter’s tenure, during which period his watercolor of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. was used as the official greeting card. (He later provided art to President Clinton.) Currently listed in Who’s Who in American Art and native to Pottstown, Watson has spent 44 years as an active member of the Philadelphia Watercolor Club, where he currently serves as archivist. Some of Watson’s prints are available for sale in the Hahn Gallery, as are his cards, featuring four original scenes of Philadelphia, raising awareness and money to end the plight of the homeless. This is the ninth year of sales, and by the end of 2002 nearly 900,000 cards will have been sold thanks to Watson’s compassion and the easy recognition of his work. For a mere $10 you have the opportunity to bring home not only 12 functional pieces of artwork but also the knowledge that you’re helping to house those who need it most. Cards will be on sale Fridays and Saturdays, Dec. 6-21, 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Central Court, Reading Terminal Market, 12th and Arch sts.; Artist Howard Watson will be at the Market on Fri., Dec. 13, noon. Cards also available at Hahn Gallery, 8439 Germantown Ave., 215-247-8439.
