December 12-18, 2002 mixpicks Uhuru Furniture Benefit Art AuctionWith the holiday season not so gently knocking on the door, prompting people to become more generous with their spending, what better time is there to compete in a little shopping battle of wits? Uhuru Furniture and Collectibles is taking advantage of looser holiday purse strings by holding a benefit art auction for the African People’s Education and Defense Fund. The Defense Fund is a nonprofit organization created to address problems in education, healthcare and economic development faced by the black community. Donations for the auction, which will feature furniture, paintings and African carvings, came from a wide range of sources including artists who exhibited at the 17th Annual Philadelphia International Art Expo and the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show; pieces also were given by local art collectors, as well as regular donations to the Uhuru Furniture and Collectibles store. “Fine art and collectibles are often included in those donations [to Uhuru], and it just seemed like a perfect match to do a benefit art auction,” says auction volunteer Peg Shaw. So if you want to get some rustic stocking stuffers or are determined to beat fellow shoppers to unique bargains, the Uhuru Benefit Art Auction might be your ticket to ride. Fri., Dec.13, preview, noon; reception, 6:30 p.m.; auction, 8 p.m., Artjaz Gallery, 53 N. Second St., 215-546-9616.
